It’s a good time to be a fledgling coffee roaster in the Bay Area. First it was the Pulley Collective giving away a year’s worth of free roasting time including training. And now there’s Coffee Roasting and Retail, a five-day educational series where attendees will receive hands-on training in multiple aspects of running a successful coffee business from some of the Bay Area’s leading coffee professionals.

Coffee Roasting and Retail is hosted by the Food Craft Institute, an Oakland-based non-profit educational institute “with the mission to reshape the U.S. food landscape by creating a permanent sector of viable artisan food businesses.” Taking place between February 22nd and March 11th, it is a mix of all-day and evening events where “new and aspiring coffee business owners will learn hands-on techniques and practitioner skills as well as the personal stories of successful roasters, wholesalers, retailers and coffee shop owners.”

Lecture topics include Hands-on Roasting Methodology and Roasting Profiles, Sourcing and Hands-on Cupping, and Cafe Staffing, Financing and Fundraising, and will be led by industry vets like Jen Apodaca of Royal Coffee and Blue Bottle’s Juliet Han.

The cost to attend Coffee Roasting and Retail is $900, which includes course and meals. But as a non-profit, the Food Craft Institute offers financial aid to participants. The deadline to sign up is Monday, February 13th at 5:00pm PST.
